The County Government of Vihiga has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Amref Health Africa in Kenya for continued engagement in transforming the health of communities through Primary Health Care(PHC) with a focus on youth and women.
Amref has so far supported Vihiga County in Community TB activities, Malaria program, Oxygen infrastructure, and mass drug administration for deworming where more than 1 million kids have been reached in schools and villages.
Led by Dr. Meshack Ndirangu (Country Director) Amref seeks to expand areas of collaboration which include:-
  • Capacity building of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs)
  • Community-led advocacy and research
  • Strengthening medical oxygen ecosystem to improve last-mile availability.
  • Focus on tropical diseases which have been neglected for a long time.
Speaking after signing the MoU, Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo noted that the collaboration with Amref is unique because Vihiga already has data that will guide the implementation of the programs and activities thus enhancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Additionally, he emphasized the need for data-driven decision-making with more efforts put towards research and publication.
